Life of an Artist 14.6.2009 - 1.1.2011
In this exhibition, Gösta presents some unprecedented works from his art collection.
The works of art at the thematic exhibition shed light on the life of the artist and how artists´ identities were formed in different times - atelier work, training, work abroad, bohemian life and the importance of art patrons to the livelihood of the artist.
We meet both artist and model in a fictional atelier, as well as articles that are part of the daily work of the artist: sketches of upcoming works, model studies and sketches and tools. Aside from self-portraits, our self-portrait gallery displays paintings portraying artists´ colleagues and relatives. Also present are art works on paper: water-colour paintings, drawings and prints, which due to their acute sensitivity to light, can be on display only for short periods of time. An ensemble of these rarities has been restored for the exhibition.
Other perspectives on the life of an artist can be found in the works of old masters from the 15th to 17th centuries, as well as in Finnish artists´ studies abroad and journeys to Paris, in particular in the late 19th century. In addition, you will get to know Gustaf Adolf Serlachius´ (1830-1901) and Gösta Serlachius´ (1876-1942) activities as art patrons. G.A. Serlachius befriended Akseli Gallen-Kallela and Emil Wikström and offered them financial support for their artistic work and trips abroad. Gösta Serlachius gathered a large art collection of both Finnish and old European art and in 1933 donated the collection to an art foundation bearing his name. Today, the Foundation is the owner of one of the largest collections of Akseli Gallen-Kallela´s work in Finland.
The exhibition has been gathered from the Gösta Serlachius Fine Arts Foundation´s collections. A dialogue between artists of the Golden Age of Finnish painting - strongly represented in the exhibition - and old Italian, Dutch and Spanish masters is clearly present. There are works from the 15th century onward to the present day.
