Calendar Event Description |
Good Friday is remembered from the Crucifixion of Christ. In churches, this day of sorrow is expressed by covering the altar with black cloth and holding the church service quietly without organs and church bells.
In Finland and in other Scandinavian countries, Good Friday is known as "Long Friday". It represents the Passion and sorrow of the day. The name "Long Friday" is rarely seen outside of Scandinavia. Elsewhere, instead of the Passion and sorrow, the great meaning of this day for Christianity; By his death, Christ beat the death, is more emphasized. English "Good Friday", French "Saint Friday" and Estonian "Great Friday", are examples of this. In older times, Good Friday was very disciplined. People were not visiting each other, dinner was late in the afternoon, mostly some left over from the day before, children had to stay home and it was common to give them a good birching. It was also considered a sin, if somebody was laughing so much that their teeth were showing.
