The tradition of Mother's Day originates in the United States, where Ann Jarvis (1864-1948) in 1907 organised a memorial ceremony in honor of her mother, who had died two years earlier. After this she started to promote the idea of Mother's Day, and in 1914 the United States Congress passed a resolution which established a mothers day observance.
At the end of the 1920's, Mothers Day was set to the second Sunday of May in Finland, and in 1947 became an official flag raising day. In Finland mothers traditionally receive flowers and home-made cards from their children, and usually breakfast, home made cake and coffee are served in bed. Later during the day families may visit grandparents, or some may visit cemeteries, in remembrance of loved ones who have passed away. Since 1946 "The Order Of The White Rose" first class medals have been distributed to distinguished mothers in Finland.
