Description |
The Day of Swedishness is celebrated in Finland by Swedish speaking Finns. The history of this day goes back to the 1800's when the Finnish language consolidated its position in Finland. To counterbalance this development, the movement of Swedishness was born in the late 1800's to emphasize the meaning of both the Swedish language and -people in Finland.
The Swedish people's party was founded in 1906 and the Day of Swedishness was celebrated for the first time on the 6th of November 1908. When chauvinism was at its height in the 1930's, there were many fights between Swedish and Finnish speaking people.
Belonging to the linguistic minority, the day of Swedishness has a great meaning for the Swedish speaking Finns as it strengthens their sense of solidarity and brings the people together.
