Finland celebrated National Veterans Day for the first time on the 27th of April 1987, as a part of the 70th anniversary of the Independence of Finland, 42 years after the Second World War.

National Veterans day is an official flag-raising day, as a mark of honor to the Finnish war veterans who are still among us.

To celebrate the occasion, municipalities and cities arrange different ceremonies, where veteran organizations are represented and veterans are invited as the guests of honor. The main festival of the day, is arranged yearly in one of the biggest cities in Finland.
